Mortality Motivation

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Mortality Motivation is an exploration into our viewpoints and understanding of death. It served as my BFA Project at Utah Valley University during my senior year. It was a labor of love as I constructed a display, designed tarot cards, and researching how we perceive death as humans.

Display of Reflection

Over the span of three months, I constructed this display to house my project. It would serve as place of reflection for my viewers to contemplate their mortality. On the primary display I present the Tarot Cards I designs alongside short descriptors of what they could expect to learn. Learning is certainly important but I knew interaction and personal reflection was needed. On the surface, I beckon my viewers to reflect on today and tomorrow. Who knows when our time will come so it’s best to appreciate the present.

Symbols of Remembrance

During those three months of building the display, I created fourteen tarot cards. Each of the cards is representative of a certain symbol humanity has associated with death throughout our history. I placed a heavy emphasis on geometric shapes, patterns, and textures for the designs.

While leaving their mark on my display, my viewers would have the opportunity to take their answers with them. Simple prompt cards would be handed out along with a symbol sheet. Doing so would allow them to continue to ponder those questions and further spread awareness of my project. An intentional way of keeping the conversation that I started to continue.
